Why every EV owner needs a Level 2 charger at home

When you buy an electric vehicle, it comes with a Level 1 charging cable that plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet. It works — but it charges your car very slowly. Most EVs gain about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour on a Level 1 charger. If you drive 50 miles a day, you're looking at 10 to 15 hours of charging every night just to keep up.

A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts — the same type of circuit as your electric dryer. It charges 5 to 8 times faster than a standard outlet. Most EV owners get 20 to 40 miles of range per hour on Level 2. You plug in when you get home and wake up to a full charge. Every morning. No planning required.

Public charging stations work in a pinch. But paying per-charge at a public station costs significantly more than charging at home, and you can't always count on availability. A home Level 2 charger is the most convenient and cost-effective way to live with an electric vehicle long term.

✅ Level 2 charging adds 20 to 40 miles of range per hour vs 3 to 5 miles per hour on a standard outlet.

What is the difference between Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chargers?

Most homeowners ask this before they call. Here is a plain-English breakdown:

Level 1 electric vehicle charger plugged into a standard 120V wall outlet for home EV charging.

Level 1 — Standard household outlet (120V)

  • Plugs into any standard wall outlet
  • Adds 3 to 5 miles of range per hour
  • Takes 20+ hours to fully charge most EVs
  • No installation needed — comes with the car
  • Fine for plug-in hybrids or very low-mileage drivers
  • Not practical for daily use in a fully electric vehicle

Level 2 EV charger installed on garage wall with dedicated electrical circuit for fast home electric vehicle charging.

Level 2 — Dedicated 240V circuit (what DNZ installs)

  • Requires a dedicated 40 to 60-amp circuit — same type as an electric dryer
  • Adds 20 to 40 miles of range per hour
  • Fully charges most EVs in 4 to 10 hours overnight
  • Installed by a licensed electrician — permit required
  • The right choice for almost every EV owner
  • Works with all EV brands — Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Chevy, BMW, Hyundai, and all others

Level 3 DC fast electric vehicle charging station with EV connector used for rapid public EV charging

Level 3 / DC Fast Charging — NOT available for home installation

  • Industrial power — requires three-phase commercial electrical service
  • Charges to 80% in 20 to 30 minutes
  • Found at public charging stations, dealerships, and commercial properties
  • Cannot be installed in a single-family home — infrastructure requirements are too large
  • Not what you need at home — Level 2 is the right solution

EV brands and charger types DNZ  installs

DNZ Electrical Services installs Level 2 home chargers for all major electric vehicle brands. We are Tesla Wall Connector certified and EVITP certified — two of the most recognized credentials in the EV charger installation trade.

Tesla Wall Connector — certified installer

DNZ Electrical Services is listed on Tesla's certified installer network. We install the Tesla Wall Connector for Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck. We handle the placement, circuit sizing, permit, and inspection. Most Tesla Wall Connector installs in the Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks area take 2 to 4 hours.

Ford, Rivian, Chevy, BMW, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and all other EVs

All modern EVs use the same J1772 standard connector for Level 2 charging — except Tesla, which now also uses the NACS connector on newer models. DNZ installs universal Level 2 charging stations that work with all brands, as well as brand-specific chargers. If you're not sure what charger your vehicle needs, call 818-514-1417 and we'll walk you through it.

What happens during a DNZ EV charger installation — step by step

Here is exactly what to expect from the first call to the finished install:

  1.  Call 818-514-1417 or book online — we schedule a same-day or next-day site assessment
  2. We assess your panel capacity, run a load calculation, measure the cable run from panel to charger location, and give you a firm written price
  3. You choose your charger — we can help you select the right unit or install one you've already purchased
  4. We pull the city permit — required for all Level 2 EV charger installations in California
  5. On install day, our licensed electrician runs the dedicated 40 to 60-amp circuit from your panel to the charger location
  6. We mount the charger, make all connections, and test the unit with your vehicle
  7. The city inspector reviews the work — usually within 1 to 3 business days
  8. Inspection passes — you are ready to charge at home
  9. We hand you the inspection sign-off paperwork and your lifetime workmanship warranty documentation

A straightforward install in an attached garage near the panel takes 2 to 4 hours. Longer wire runs, outdoor mounting, or panel upgrades add time. DNZ tells you the full timeline during the assessment — no surprises

Do I need a Electrical panel upgrade to install an EV charger?

Not always — and DNZ will never recommend a electrical panel upgrade unless you actually need one. Here is how we figure it out:

A Level 2 EV charger needs a dedicated 40 to 60-amp circuit. If your home has a 200-amp panel with available breaker space and enough capacity after accounting for your other appliances — air conditioning, electric dryer, water heater — you most likely do not need a panel upgrade. DNZ runs a load calculation on every EV charger job to confirm this before we recommend anything.

You are more likely to need a panel upgrade if:

  • Your panel is 100 amps — common in homes built before 1980
  • Your panel is 200 amps but already very full with no breaker space available
  • Your home runs high-draw appliances that already load the panel heavily
  • You want to install two EV chargers — one for each vehicle
  • You are also planning to add solar, a home battery, or a pool pump

If you do need a panel upgrade, DNZ handles both jobs at once. One permit, one inspection, one visit. The panel upgrade and EV charger are planned together from the start so everything is sized correctly. Ask about our combo pricing when you call.

✅ DNZ runs a free load calculation on every EV charger assessment. We tell you whether you need a panel upgrade or not — no upsell, no pressure

Questions ask about EV charger installation

Q: How much does EV charger installation cost in Thousand Oaks or Agoura Hills?

Most Level 2 EV charger installations in Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills run $800 to $1,500 for labor and permit fees. The charger hardware is a separate cost — typically $400 to $800 depending on the brand. Your all-in total for a straightforward garage install is usually $900 to $2,300. If a panel upgrade is needed, add $3,500 to $5,000. DNZ gives you a firm price after the site assessment. Call 818-514-1417

Q: How long does EV charger installation take?

A straightforward Level 2 install in an attached garage near the electrical panel takes 2 to 4 hours. More complex jobs — longer wire runs, outdoor mounting, or combined with a panel upgrade — take 4 to 8 hours. The city inspection happens after the install, usually within 1 to 3 business days. DNZ tells you the full timeline during the site assessment.

Q: Is there a tax credit for home EV charger installation?

Yes. The federal Section 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit covers 30% of your installation cost, up to $1,000 for residential installs. This credit expires June 30, 2026. SCE customers may also qualify for up to $4,200 in rebates through the Charge Ready Home program. DNZ is an SCE Approved Contractor and can help you navigate both programs. Consult your tax advisor for eligibility confirmation.

Q: Does SCE offer a rebate for EV charger installation?

Yes. Southern California Edison's Charge Ready Home program provides rebates of up to $4,200 for income-qualified residential customers upgrading their panel and installing a Level 2 EV charger. Residents in qualifying disadvantaged communities can receive up to $2,100. DNZ is an SCE Approved Contractor participating in this program. Applications are accepted through June 30, 2026, or until funds run out. Call 818-514-1417 to ask if you qualify.

Q: Do I need a permit to install an EV charger at home in California?

Yes. A permit is required for all Level 2 EV charger installations in California. This is not optional — it's California electrical code. DNZ pulls the permit, completes the work to code, and schedules the city inspection. You don't have to handle any paperwork. Unpermitted EV charger work can cause problems when you sell your home and may affect your homeowner's insurance.

Q: Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?

Not always. Most homes with a 200-amp panel that has available breaker space can add an EV charger circuit without an upgrade. If your panel is 100 amps, or if it's already heavily loaded, you may need an upgrade first. DNZ runs a free load calculation on every EV charger job to check your panel before recommending anything. We never upsell a panel upgrade unless the numbers show you actually need one.

Q: Are you a Tesla-certified EV charger installer?

Yes. DNZ Electrical Services is a Tesla Wall Connector certified installer. We are listed on Tesla's certified installer network for our service area. This means we've been trained and approved by Tesla to install Wall Connector equipment to Tesla's standards, and your Wall Connector warranty remains intact with a certified install.

Q: What is EVITP certification and why does it matter?

EVITP stands for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program. It is the nationally recognized certification for electricians who specialize in EV charging infrastructure. DNZ holds this certification. Most electricians who offer EV charger installation have not completed this program. EVITP certification means we've been specifically trained in the technical and code requirements for EV charging equipment — not just general electrical work.
