What is the SCE Charge Ready Home program?
The SCE Charge Ready Home program is a rebate program run by Southern California Edison that helps eligible residential customers pay for electrical panel upgrades needed to install a Level 2 EV charger at home. Most homes built before the mid-1980s in Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, and surrounding areas were wired with 100-amp panels — a capacity that is not sufficient to safely add an EV charger circuit. Upgrading to a 200-amp panel costs $2,500 to $5,000. The Charge Ready Home rebate covers up to 100% of that cost for qualifying households.
The program is administered by Southern California Edison and funded through California's clean energy programs. It is available to SCE residential customers in the SCE service territory — which covers most of LA County and Ventura County including Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Westlake Village, Moorpark, Simi Valley, and surrounding communities. DNZ's entire service area falls within SCE territory.
The program has two rebate levels based on household income and location — income-qualified and geographic-based. You do not need to already own an EV to apply. You just need to commit to installing a Level 2 charger within 180 days of the panel upgrade.

Two rebate levels — income-qualified and geographic
The Charge Ready Home program has two ways to qualify. You only need to meet the requirements for one of them. Here is how each works:
Rebate Level 1 — Income-Qualified — Up to $4,200
The income-qualified rebate covers 100% of your panel upgrade cost up to $4,200. You qualify for this level if either of the following is true:
- Your total household income is less than 80% of the area median income (AMI) for your area
- You are currently enrolled in at least one qualifying public assistance program
Qualifying public assistance programs include:
- CARE (California Alternate Rates for Energy)
- FERA (Family Electric Rate Assistance)
- CalFresh (SNAP / Food Stamps)
- Medi-Cal
- WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)
- National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Head Start Income Eligible
- Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
If you are already enrolled in CARE or FERA through SCE, you almost certainly qualify for the full $4,200 income-qualified rebate. Call 818-514-1417 and we will confirm immediately.
Rebate Level 2 — Geographic-Based — Up to $2,100
The geographic-based rebate covers 50% of your panel upgrade cost up to $2,100. You qualify for this level if you live in a designated Disadvantaged Community (DAC) as defined by California's SB353 Disadvantaged Communities Map — regardless of your income.
DAC designation is based on environmental and socioeconomic factors in your census tract. Some neighborhoods in the Ventura County and western LA County area qualify. The easiest way to check is to call DNZ at 818-514-1417 — we look up your address in the SCE eligibility tool during the assessment visit.
★ Important: You can only qualify for one rebate level — income-qualified OR geographic-based, not both. If you qualify for both, you receive the income-qualified rebate ($4,200) since it is higher.

Who is eligible for the SCE Charge Ready Home rebate?
To receive the Charge Ready Home rebate, every applicant must meet all of the following base requirements — plus qualify for either the income-qualified or geographic-based rebate level above.
Requirement 1 — SCE residential customer
You must be an active SCE residential customer. You will need your SCE customer account number and service address when applying. DNZ verifies SCE service territory for your address during the assessment visit. The entire DNZ service area in Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Westlake Village, Moorpark, and surrounding cities falls within SCE service territory.
Requirement 3 — Must install a new 200-amp panel
The work must result in a new 200-amp main electric service panel. The new panel must include a dedicated 240-volt outlet located within 25 feet of a dedicated off-street parking spot — a garage, carport, or driveway. DNZ installs the panel and the dedicated 240V circuit in the same visit.
Requirement 5 — Work must be done by a licensed contractor in the SCE network
SCE requires that all panel upgrade work be completed by a contractor holding a California C-10 electrical license or General B license who is registered in the Charge Ready Home Contractor Network. DNZ holds both license types under CA license #1010883 and is an active SCE Approved Contractor. You cannot use just any licensed electrician — they must be in the SCE network. DNZ is.
DNZ is.
Requirement 2 — Existing panel must be less than 200 amps
Your current electrical panel must be rated below 200 amps to qualify. Most Conejo Valley homes built before 1987 have 100-amp panels — these qualify. If your home already has a 200-amp panel, it does not qualify for this rebate. DNZ confirms your panel rating during the assessment visit.
Requirement 4 — Must install a Level 2 EV charger within 180 days
After the panel upgrade is complete, you must install a Level 2 (240V) EV charger within 180 days. The charger can be hardwired or plug-in. You do not need to own or lease an EV at the time of application — you just need to commit to installing the charger within the 180-day window. DNZ installs the EV charger immediately after the panel upgrade in most cases, completing both in a single day.
Requirement 6 — Permits required
All panel upgrade work must be permitted and inspected by the local authority having jurisdiction — the City of Thousand Oaks, City of Agoura Hills, or whichever city applies. DNZ pulls all permits and coordinates all inspections as part of the job. Unpermitted work does not qualify for the rebate.
⚠️ Rebate funds are limited and allocated on a first-come basis. Once the program's allocated funds are exhausted, no new applications are accepted. Apply as early as possible to reserve your rebate. Call 818-514-1417 today.
What is the difference between Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chargers?
Most homeowners ask this before they call. Here is a plain-English breakdown:
Level 1 — Standard household outlet (120V)
- Plugs into any standard wall outlet
- Adds 3 to 5 miles of range per hour
- Takes 20+ hours to fully charge most EVs
- No installation needed — comes with the car
- Fine for plug-in hybrids or very low-mileage drivers
- Not practical for daily use in a fully electric vehicle
Level 2 — Dedicated 240V circuit (what DNZ installs)
- Requires a dedicated 40 to 60-amp circuit — same type as an electric dryer
- Adds 20 to 40 miles of range per hour
- Fully charges most EVs in 4 to 10 hours overnight
- Installed by a licensed electrician — permit required
- The right choice for almost every EV owner
- Works with all EV brands — Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Chevy, BMW, Hyundai, and all others
Level 3 / DC Fast Charging — NOT available for home installation
- Industrial power — requires three-phase commercial electrical service
- Charges to 80% in 20 to 30 minutes
- Found at public charging stations, dealerships, and commercial properties
- Cannot be installed in a single-family home — infrastructure requirements are too large
- Not what you need at home — Level 2 is the right solution

Questions ask about SCE Charge Ready Home rebate
Q: How do I know if I qualify for the SCE Charge Ready Home rebate?
You qualify for the income-qualified rebate (up to $4,200) if your household income is below 80% of the area median income for your area or if you are enrolled in a qualifying public assistance program such as CARE, FERA, CalFresh, Medi-Cal, or SSI. You qualify for the geographic-based rebate (up to $2,100) if you live in a designated Disadvantaged Community per California's SB353 map. You must also be an SCE residential customer with a panel currently rated below 200 amps. Call DNZ at 818-514-1417 and we will verify your eligibility on the assessment visit.
Q: Do I need to already own an EV to apply for the rebate?
No. You do not need to own or lease an EV at the time of application. You only need to commit to installing a Level 2 (240V) EV charger within 180 days of completing the panel upgrade. Many Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills homeowners apply for the rebate while their EV is still on order or while they are in the process of considering an EV purchase.
Q: Does the rebate cover the EV charger itself or just the panel upgrade?
The SCE Charge Ready Home rebate covers the panel upgrade cost only — not the EV charger hardware or charger installation labor. The rebate amount covers up to 100% of your panel upgrade cost for income-qualified households (up to $4,200) or 50% for geographic-based households (up to $2,100). The federal 30C tax credit covers up to 30% of your EV charger installation cost separately, up to $1,000.
Q: Can renters apply for the SCE Charge Ready Home rebate?
Yes. Tenants are eligible for the rebate if they provide written approval from the property owner authorizing the electrical panel upgrade work. The tenant applies as the SCE account holder and the owner provides written consent. DNZ can walk you through the documentation requirements if you are a renter interested in the program.
Q: How long does the SCE Charge Ready Home rebate process take?
The panel upgrade and EV charger installation are typically complete in 1 to 3 weeks from first call to finished installation, depending on city permit scheduling. SCE rebate processing takes an additional 4 to 8 weeks after all documentation is submitted and the application is approved. DNZ manages all documentation and keeps you updated throughout. The rebate is delivered electronically to DNZ or mailed directly to you.
Q: Can I apply for the rebate after the work is already done?
Yes. You can apply for the rebate up to six months after completing the panel upgrade. However, DNZ strongly recommends applying before the work begins so your rebate funds are reserved during the review period. Funding is limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis — waiting until after installation means your funds may not be available if the program has exhausted its allocation.
Q: What documents do I need for the SCE Charge Ready Home application?
Required documents include a current government-issued photo ID, your SCE customer account number, proof of income eligibility or public assistance program enrollment (for the income-qualified rebate), permits from the local city, itemized invoices from the contractor, photos of the completed panel upgrade and EV charger circuit, and a signed Electric Vehicle Charger Attestation. DNZ gathers and submits all contractor-side documentation on your behalf.
Q: Does DNZ handle the SCE application paperwork?
Yes. DNZ handles all contractor-side application documentation — itemized invoices, permit records, installation photos, and the Electric Vehicle Charger Attestation. We also help you set up your SCE program account and complete the intake form. The only things you need to provide personally are your SCE account number, government ID, and income or assistance program documentation for the income-qualified rebate pathway.
